WHAT WE DO

Ziggy's House is a 501(c)(4) dedicated to providing high-quality, no-cost tutoring to schools and communities in central San Diego. There are three main components to what we do.

High Quality-Tutoring Clinics

Right now, many San Diego schools are not adequately staffed, and those who volunteer to assist with the shortages are not properly trained or qualified. Ziggy’s House gives San Diego students the tutors they need and deserve. This year, we are proud to announce our partnership with Lincoln High School and Creative Preforming Media Arts Middle.

HIRING

At Ziggy’s House, our number one priority is recruiting tutors who are motivated, qualified, and intelligent—period.

Here’s our hiring process:

  • The tutor must have college-level proficiency in multiple subjects

  • The tutor must pass a Zoom interview

  • The tutor must be trained in general teaching strategy and tutoring via Zoom

  • The tutor must pass an FBI background check

Our tutors must be able to operate independently but also communicate any problems they can’t solve themself. When it comes to that, both our program partners and private clients are encouraged to speak with management directly. We'll up pick our phones any time of day.

With these tutors, Ziggy's House plans to open zero-cost public tutoring clinics at as many location as we can afford. In the 2022-2023 school year, our goal is to open 5 locations across San Diego. We already have 2.

EXPENSES

Here’s the breakdown of our expenses, and where your donations will go:

  • We have a minimum 25% administrative fee

  • Fundraising is done pro bono by our board of directors

  • We pay our tutors $35 per hour

  • Each tutoring clinic will last 1 - 2 hours

  • Each clinic assists between 5-9 students

  • There will be 2 - 3 clinics a week

  • The clinics will be at the most convenient time for students

  • The clinics will operate the full 9-month school year

  • Each location will cost $7560 to fund for the entire school year

If, for example, we were given the K-12 Youth Services Community Grant’s lowest award of $50,000, Ziggy’s House could provide five of San Diego’s most underserved schools with a dedicated tutor—at no charge.

But Ziggy’s House does more than that.

Literacy and Phonics

We’re also working with the Chair of the San Diego Council on Literacy, Jose Cruz. The SDCOL is associated with more than 40 other educational non-profits in San Diego. But we have something they don’t: qualified, background-checked tutors.

The SDCOL wants our tutors to put phonics back into San Diego homes They want us to provide their network of clients with in-home literacy tutoring at no charge to the family. Our literacy program’s target demographic is grades K-3, because without literacy, there’s no learning.
